Times to Explore the World of Fasteners and Bearings

February 17th 2009 06:32
The world is full with many fantastic and remarkable things, it’s also our duty to explore the unknown territory and reveal the mystery.

I’ve many friends that involving themselves in different types of jobs, such as the technology, psychology, physiology, oncology, metallurgy and much more (If I list all of it, you’ll probably get bored of it). Although we’re living in different cities all across the country, but we always keep contact with each other from time to time.

Yesterday, Jansen, my former senior high classmate and good friend of mine, has dropped me a visit. We’ve spending a whole day chatting about our life, family, friends and career. According to Jansen, he is now working as a supervisor in an electric power transmission factory. It’s a very challenging job, where he need to keep his vision and awareness all day long. As a tiny careless can cause a very huge catastrophe!

During the conversation, I’ve asked Jansen several questions about his job. One of the questions is about the tools that they’re frequently used in the daily work. He told me that fasteners and bearings are amongst the most familiar devices in this industry.

For those that didn’t know what fastener is, it actually a hardware device that can be mechanically joined or affixes two objects together easily. Most of the time, the fasteners are being used to close a container, such as an electrical box or power box in the factory. Below here are some of the common types of fasteners:

• Bolt,
• Button,
• Cap screw,
• Clip,
• Clutch,
• Nail,
• Pin,
• Screw,
• Snap,
• Staple,
• Tie,
• Toggle,
• Zipper.

Beside that, bearings are another important devices that being used in the electric power transmission, where it’s a device that allow constrained relative motion between two parts (It can be typically rotation or linear movement). A good and long lasting bearing must be a bearing that have extremely low friction, where it can reduce wear and achieve high speeds instantly.

Basically, a bearing can reduce friction by having different shapes, by its material or by applying fluid between surfaces. Here are the different types of bearings:

• Annular Bearings,
• Bushing Bearings,
• Needle Bearings,
• Rod End Bearings,
• Roller Bearings,
• Sleeve Bearings,
• Washer Bearings.

After about six hours of chatting, Jansen was heading back to his home. We’ve spent a wonderful day and we both have learned something on each other. Hope our friendship will last forever. May god bless Jansen and his family!
