The Basic Knowledge of Integrated Circuits

December 8th 2008 08:29
In the electronics world, there are many electronic parts that being manufactured for different purposes, such as the Programmable Interface Controller (PIC), Arduino, IC and so on.

Talking about IC, do you know what the main function of this stuff is? For your information, an integrated circuit or also known as IC or microchip, is a miniaturized electronic circuit that has been manufactured in the surface of a thin substrate of semiconductor material.

The integrated circuits are mostly being used in almost all electronic appliances, including your TV set, radio, desktop computer, laptop, cell phone and much more. Therefore, IC is to be recognized as one of the most familiar electronic components in present day!

The German engineer, Werner Jacobi who is worked under Siemens AG has successfully fielded a patent for an integrated-circuit-like semiconductor amplifying device in 1949. This device is to be known as the world's earliest integrated circuit!

Below here are the generations of the integrated circuits:

SSI
SSI is the short acronym for "Small-Scale Integration." SSI is the first generation IC that contained only a few transistors.

MSI
Medium-Scale Integration (MSI) is the second generation, where it contained over hundreds of transistors in one chip!

LSI
The third stage, Large-Scale Integration (LSI) is contained with ten of thousands of transistors on each chip, has been developed in the mid 1970s.

VLSI
It is known as "Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI),"where it can be contained more than hundreds of thousands of transistors has available on the market in the early 1980s.

ULSI
The fifth generation, "Ultra Large-Scale Integration," which it can contain more than 1 million transistors per IC!

That's all for the integrated circuits, and I hope you all have learned some valuable knowledge from it. Until then, Ciao...

Yeap, it did, Katyzzz. And, I heard from my friend that there will be the new "TLSI" or also known as, "Tetra Large-Scale Integration," which each of the chip can contain up to billion of transistors!
