Is it possible to Improve PC Performance with a Registry Cleaner?
August 7th 2009 04:19
The windows® registry and file system is a mysterious mess for most home PC users. Even trained computer repair technicians don't always know exactly where they're going to remove a file or registry key. It makes sense that they can use software to clean out old files, junk data and the Windows® registry.
What if you could get your hands on that same software PC repair techs use to improve performance and speed at their shop? Wouldn't you be able to do the same thing since the software does most of the heavy lifting? Registry cleaners are one of the primary tools used to clean out old and junk files, along with removing incorrect and bad registry keys.
In this article we'll look at how you can choose the best registry repair program to find and repair errors along with improving your PC's speed. I won't make any specific recommendations since software is changing all the time, but I'll give you enough information for you to make the right decision.
Comparing the Top Registry Cleaners
Before writing this article I spent some time doing a registry cleaner comparison of the top programs available. A few things really surprised me when I did this test. One was that no matter how many errors a registry cleaner found they almost always repaired fewer items. So are these programs bulking up the number of items called errors to make their programs look better?
I don't think that is the case, I believe that all items found are actual errors, how ever these programs only repair what's crucial to improve the performance of your PC.
The second thing I noticed was that while all programs offered a free scan, backup and repair utility a few also offered bonus features such as a junk file cleaner, start-up optimizer and PC optimizer. While these bonus features weren't actually part of the “registry repair” process they were worth while features that improved the performance of my test computers.
Selecting a Registry Repair Utility
I'm sure you're not interested in going through the same in-depth testing I did on registry cleaners so I'll give you the quick run down on what to look for when choosing a program.
1.)Download Free Trials, and compare at least three different programs. Look at how many errors each program finds. Note ones that seem to find a lot more then others. More errors doesn't mean better, but if two cleaners find 300 errors and another finds 800 you can quickly eliminate the program that found 800.
2.)Look for programs that can automatically set a windows® restore point. Using windows ®restore points is the safest form of backup.
3.)Compare the additional features that come with each program. I've found that getting a registry cleaner with a start-up optimizer and junk file remover are the most helpful. They will have the biggest impact on your start-up time and over all system performance.
Hope the above tips might able to help you wipe off the hassle. If you have any question, remember to drop me a mail and I'll try to help you overcome it!
