Downloading YouTube videos painlessly
August 31st 2008 17:28
People are generally happy with the world’s biggest video sharing portal. They do not have to take any pains to share their videos with family and friends all over the world. They know that all that is required of them to share their videos is to become a member of YouTube and that does not cost any money. Once they have signed up for the services of this video-sharing site, they can upload their favorite videos and send the url of the same to others to see and enjoy.
YouTube for the video connoisseur
Those who have not checked out YouTube are recommended to do so now. The sheer number of videos across many categories is a treat for the video connoisseur. There are many people who rip the latest movies and upload parts of the same on this website for others to enjoy. There are many occasions when one has taken a video of his kid’s birthday and has uploaded the same on to YouTube. Once they do so, they send the details about the URL to their friends and relatives who can access the same recently.
A few days back, one of my friends too had received a notification by email about a video that had been uploaded to YouTube. This person is a computer wizard but he does not use the net too much and hence has got little idea about YouTube, however he does knows that right clicking a video file and selecting the `save file as’ option is the only way to download a video file from the web.
Downloading daughter’s birthday video
He is going to learn some other methods today. When he tried to download the file in question... it was a video of his daughter’s birthday and she stays in far away Japan... there were no drop down menus. He tried using different browsers but had no luck. It was at this point I showed him a trick on how one can save videos from YouTube in seconds. A little explanation was more than enough. Here is the secret. When you find a video that you like on YouTube, just view the source of that page. In firefox just select 'View’ on the menu bar and from the drop down list select `page source’. Alternatively you can use the keyboard shortcut, which is 'Ctrl U’.
Use the find feature ('Crtl F’) to find for 'player2.swf’ copy the entire url that is associated with that name and replace the 'player2.swf’ with "www.youtube.com/get_video". Now copy the entire edited URL and paste the same on the address bar of your browser and hit enter. You will be prompted to save the video. Remember to check the extension of the video that you are going to save. If it does not have the "extension.flv" extension at the end of the filename, add it now. The file name should look something like this: "ididit.flv". The file will be downloaded and saved successfully. The windows media player might not be able to play those files, but there are lots of free flash video converters available to download.
